Kids everywhere get just as excited for Halloween night as they do for Christmas. As parents, we want them to have the most enjoyable experience as possible, but we also have to remember that trick-or-treating in 2019 is nowhere near what it was back in 1999. The National Safety Council reports that Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year. So let’s take a look at a few easy ways we can make Halloween safe and fun for everyone!
Costumes:
- Choose costumes and bags with light colors and reflective tape or stickers
- Opt for face paint and makeup over a mask if possible; a mask could limit your child’s ability to see where they are going unobstructed.
- Wear glow stick necklaces and bracelets or bring a flashlight
Walking safety:
- Put your electronics down and pay attention to where you are walking
- Try to use sidewalks when possible
- Stay in well-lit areas
- Be aware of vehicles and neighborhood hayrides that may be out at the same time
Driving:
- Drive extra slow
- Do double and triple and even quadruple checks when turning or proceeding through an intersection
- Make every effort to get to your destination before local trick or treat times start in neighborhoods
