I have zero shame in admitting that I’m getting through the mom gig with A LOT of outside help. And I feel like there are many moms that are scared to admit that they don’t have it all together. Instead, they give out an image they want the world to perceive and silently crumble behind closed doors. I’m no mental health professional, but I’m throwing a flag here. One of the best pieces of advice I was given after giving birth to my only son was that “in order to be the best mom for my son, I have to be the best for myself first”. Alright sis, I’m stepping off my soapbox now.
It’s hard to ask for help; it feels like looking for advice diminishes our powerful mom vibe, I totally get it sister. That is exactly how I fell into the world of podcasts. A friend suggested a certain podcast to me at a time where I was just down in the dumps and blamed the world for everything wrong happening in my life. She explained to me that she listened to audiobooks and podcasts in her car on her way to and from work and said that listening to different episodes based on how she was feeling that day or based on what type of workday she had ahead of her completely changed her mood and she also said that she felt like she could conquer anything. One year later, I probably listen to 4-5 podcast episodes per week and if I had more time, I’d probably listen to more. Here are six of my favorites, in no particular order.
Rise Podcast with Rachel Hollis (Personal Development)
What it is about: Tangible and tactical tools for your life and business.
Why I like it: Rachel has become my numero uno car riding companion. The way she fluctuates her tone, the little motivating catchphrases she throws out, and the amount of unwavering encouragement she gives in a short amount of time is such a boost for my whole day. I’ll admit that sometimes she shakes my soul so much that I’m crying when pulling into work. I feel like I relate to her the most because she was not “Educated and trained” to do this. She is just like so many of us, researching and finding our own way to make this life meaningful and impactful.
Mike Boudet’s Sword and Scale (True Crime)
What it is about: Sword and Scale reviews crime cases that are both prominent in media and as well as lesser-known incidents. They dive real deep into the why’s and the how’s of each individual investigation. Sometimes, you will hear 911 calls at length and interrogations.
Why I like it: I. Am. A. True Crime. FANATIC!!!!! I don’t know why, but I have always been drawn to crime stories. And not series fictional pieces like NCIS, I mean real people. In a way, I feel like listening to some of these cases makes me hyper-aware of my surroundings. In today’s world, I don’t think that is such a bad thing. WARNING: This is not the podcast to listen with your small children. Heck, I don’t even listen with my pre-teen. This is a totally unfiltered show and talks in very graphic detail.
TED Talks Daily (Presentations, Speeches)
What it is about: TED Talks Daily is a collection of short “speeches” on a variety of topics from influential people presented at TED and TEDx conferenced around the globe. No topic is taboo, and perscpectives vary greatly.
Why I like it: I have always been interested in learning why people perceive things the way they do. Hearing these short talks reminds me to remain open-minded to others. It also inspires me to remember that maybe all of my crazy ideas aren’t really so crazy. After all, people at one point brushed off electricity and online shopping as completely ridiculous, but here I am online shopping my little heart out.
The Mom Hour (Parenting)
What it is about: The Mom Hour is a podcast that talks about parenting, pregnancy, and raising kids all the way from birth to teens.
Why I like it: They are not experts, just real-life moms trying to make it. There are plenty enough “experts” out there, sometimes we just need to hear another mom talk about her highs and lows, her ups and downs, her successes and failures, and honestly how she bribed her kids to love broccoli so that we can do the same. Being a mom is the best job in the world, and sometimes it’s tough. But it’s nice to know we are not alone, and even nicer to be able to laugh about it.
ADDitude (Medical, Mental Health, ADHD)
What it is about: ADDitude is the trusted resource for families and adults living with ADHD and related conditions and the professionals who work with them. In addition to their podcast, they have a monthly magazine, a website filled with ADHD information and resources, they host webinars with various professionals about ADHD topics, and much more.
Why I like it: My son has ADHD. My son has lived with this diagnosis for going on six years now. It has been a journey, but ADDitude has been an incredible resource. Why do you ask? Simply put, both my son and I would rather him not be on medication. That is not realistic during the school year for him at this current moment. For him to get to a point where he could be off meds during the school year, there are many milestones we need to get to first with self-control being the major factor. Just for us to manage it so well that not many people know he even has ADHD has taken us years of understanding how diet, physical activity, and other factors affect his ADHD. Aside from listening to it for him, I listen to it for myself because parenting a child with ADHD is not easy. Dealing with him is easy, dealing with people who don’t understand it has been the challenge. So in addition to getting advice from the Mom Hour podcast, I get parenting tips and advice here also.
Nutrition Diva (Health and Nutrition)
What it is about: Nutrition Diva helps to sort food facts from fiction, separate the good information from the bad, and to make eating healthy just a little bit easier – and a lot saner.
Why I like it: If you tell me that red meat causes cancer, I’m the first one to get rid of all red meat I have without even researching. Maybe it is my naivety, maybe it is my instinct to want to believe others and protect myself. Nutrition Diva is that voice that tells me that maybe I should not rush to throw out the quality red meat I spent hard-earned money on. In my busy life, I don’t always have the time to research the latest food news and diets. Nutrition Diva covers everything from fad diets and supplements to food intolerances and meal planning.
